Logic Behind the Rankings - October 3, 2024
Method and reasoning
We are often asked how we came to select the way we do our rankings. The answer is not complicated and easy to understand.
When the Scoreboard was founded more than 25 years ago , one group of experts we talked to were college coaches. The only other system used "points" to determine the players' abilities. They wanted scoring to be the heart of any new system. So that's what we did. But it needed to be based on a common criteria or metric. So that's what we looked for and chose.
The rating of the golf course, adjusted for yardage played, and course conditions is common for all players around the world. To compare the ability of players, they have to have something in common when they are not playing together on the same course on the same day. While we are not computing handicaps, it is the core of the method in the handicap system with which everyone is familiar.
If one thinks carefully about college recruiting, the one thing 100% of college coaches look at first are a player's scores, not head-to-head or recreational rounds but competitive rounds.
This approach has been proven over time as a way to compare players.
Hope this helps. Play well.
