Coaches and Recruiting - January 8, 2025
Many Factors
College golf recruiting has many different factors that affect how a college golf coach recruits even before they search for and contact a prospective recruit. Here are some of them:
Squad size
With the pending NCAA changes, college golf teams may be affected by roster limits for those over the limit, how many players they can recruit in a given year may change.
Transfers and graduations
How many players are graduating and how many of their players will transfer through the NCAA Transfer Portal or transfer in from the portal, will affect the number of recruits as well.
Scholarship budget
Some schools are not fully budgeted for the maximum scholarships allowed by the NCAA.
Talent Level
What level of talent is a program looking for? Not every school tries to recruit a top 100 player in the class because they know there is a limited possibility of landing that recruit. So coaches have been known to start by looking deeper in class talent on the Scoreboard.
Academically qualified
There are several schools, especially D-III programs and Ivy League, where the recruit has to be admitted to the school first.
Verbal committments
How many verbals have they received and made basically two years in advance, end of a recruits sophomore year
So that's just a sample of what happens "behind the scenes" with college golf recruiting.
